St. Henri's slaughterhouse problem

Private Slaughtering – The Montreal Daily Post, Feb 4, 1886

There is at present a little misunderstanding existing between the residents of St. Henri and a number of Montreal butchers. It appears that the latter, in lieu of conducting their cattle to the abattoir for slaughtering, place them in the charge of certain men at St. Henri, who keep private slaughter houses, and who undertake the killing of these cattle for a small sum. But the citizens of St. Henri have protested against the little enterprise, and complain of the stench arising from the private slaughter houses, which are the greatest medium of infection. A requisition was signed and presented to the Council at the meeting last evening, but nothing was definitely settled. The Council would only do justice to the residents if they undertook to completely abolish all slaughtering in private places.
