The neighbour finally noticed
Stealing Fence Boards – Montreal Daily Witness Apr. 14, 1880
A man named Octave Toussaint was arrested yesterday in Hochelaga for stealing the fences of his neighbours for fire wood. It appeared that he committed the offence more or less all the winter. The magistrate fined him $5 and costs or one month’s imprisonment; he was also given fifteen days to make good the damage to the parties, or, failing the latter, to be imprisoned for two months at hard labor.
